Because Japan in Edo period was under Sakoku (the self-imposed isolationist policy) , it had been prohibited to trade with foreign countries. Still, Dejima in Nagasaki only had been permitted to trade, various cultures had been introduced from Europe and China. From this historical background, many Western style building such as Ōura Church that is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Japan, and Glover Garden that built for a Scottish merchant, Thomas Blake Glover remain in Nagasaki Prefecture. In addition, there is Nagasaki Chinatown that is one of three designated Chinatowns (Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki) in Japan.

On August 9 1945, the United States Army Air Forces dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, which extensively damaged the major part of the city. Now, many people that pray for world peace have visited Nagasaki Peace Park and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum.
