江戸時代、山口県は長州藩と呼ばれており、毛利氏が藩主でした。毛利氏は、天下分け目の「関ヶ原の戦い」で徳川家康に敵対して敗北したため、石高を減らされ、苦しい財政が長く続きました。こうした背景から、長州藩には倒幕思想が強くありました。
幕末、吉田松陰という偉大な思想家が登場します。彼は私塾の松下村塾を主宰し、世界に目を向けた先進的な教育を行います。高杉晋作、久坂玄瑞、伊藤博文（初代総理大臣）、山縣有朋など、優秀な若者が集まります。後に伊藤博文を含む5人の若者（長州ファイブ ※写真）はイギリスに留学し、進んだ西洋文明に驚きます。加えて、桂小五郎（木戸孝允）は薩摩藩と「薩長同盟」を結び、ついに倒幕を実現。明治新政府を樹立させます。以後、山口県からは多数の政治家が輩出され続けており、現在の安倍晋三首相も山口県出身です。

In Edo Period, Yamaguchi Prefecture was called Chōshū domain. The domain was founded by Mōri clan. Chōshū domain’s kokudaka (income) was reduced by Tokugawa shogunate (Edo Bakuhu) and had been a long time poor due to their having fought against Tokugawa Ieyasu at Decisive battle, the Battle of Sekigahara. In this background, Chōshū became a hotbed of anti-Tokugawa activities.
In Bakumatsu (the final years of the Edo period) a great thinker Yoshida Shōin appeared. He presided over tiny private school, Shoka Sonjuku, gave advanced international education. Excellent young people such as Takasugi Shinsaku, Kusaka Genzui, Ito Hirobumi (the first Prime Minister of Japan) and Yamagata Aritomo gathered at the Shoka Sonjuku. Later years the Chōshū Five including Ito Hirobumi (*Fig.) studied in England, were surprised by advanced Western civilization. In addition, Kido Takayoshi known as Katsura Kogorō had strengthened cooperation with Satsuma domain (Satsuma-Chōshū Alliance). Finally Tokugawa shogunate was successfully overthrown, and the New Meiji government was established by Chōshū and Satsuma domains. Thereafter Yamaguchi Prefecture has produced many politicians. The current Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s family is also originally from Yamaguchi Prefecture.
When you travel in Yamaguchi Prefecture, should visit the places associated with the Meiji Restoration such as Shoka Sonjuku and Hagi museum.
